Building on the insights developed in the strategy phase, the design phase lays out a blueprint for the materials, people, technology, protocols, policy, and procedures that will ensure a seamless integration of planned initiatives. The design blueprint provides actionable, concrete initiatives in four main areas of organizational systems.

      • Upstream – procurement and supply (what comes into the organization or onto a site)
      • Midstream – operations and patrons (how resources are transformed/used/consumed)
      • Downstream – resource recovery and waste management (what is left over from an organization's or site's operations)
      • System-wide – communications and continuous improvement (seamless integration)
